The Best Advice Ever

What is the best advice you EVER received?

I share mine below. Leave your best advice in the comments below.

  • Rod Schneider

The best advice I ever received was “Have a go ya mug!”.

There is a bible verse I learnt in Sunday school that goes “If you only look at us, you might well miss the brightness. We carry this precious Message around in the unadorned clay pots of our ordinary lives. That’s to prevent anyone from confusing God’s incomparable power with us. As it is, there’s not much chance of that. You know for yourselves that we’re not much to look at.”

The message is: It doesn’t matter what you look like or where you’ve come from, even if you look like dirt have a go anyway. You never know, you might surprise yourself and everyone else when the light from within you starts to shine through the cracks of your broken life!

Have a go ya mug! Even if you feel like a broken one.

That’s great advice Dean. My fav is “one good turn gets all the covers” but I suspect you want something a little more motivation based?

In that case I’d go with “Have pride in yourself and others will follow suit”. It implicates that believing in what you do and showing as much will ensure that others will also follow… as long as you’re not being evil to others of course ;)

Dean, you know as well as I do that you need a shave and a haircut… and, by the look of you, you probably also need a massage ;-)

For those who like trivia “Have a go ya mug!” is a popular expression in Australian cricket. This is what people in the audience say when a batsman is playing defensively (trying not to get bowled out) instead of trying to hit the ball to get some runs on the board.

I’m a proud Aussie (in case you haven’t guessed).

I’ve received so much good advice it’s crazy.

But one that stands out to me right now is

“Do it and find a way to make it work later”

An early mentor of mine told me this and I’ve never forgot it. It’s very true when it comes to business.

The best advice I have heard was spurned while watching your video – “KISS – keep it simple stupid.” (not referring to you by any means – lol)

We want to make things soo complicated and be something or someone that we are not. Be true to yourself and stop looking all around for the answers as they lay within each of us. Now I’m thinking of another “to thine own self be true”…..

Gotta sign off or this will NEVER End….

@Peter, always? Even when you are watching tv or down the shops? hehe

@Brenda, absolutely, if you can explain something complex in a simple way, they you will be successful in whatever you do.

Six words from George Parker, the legendary adman CHANGED MY LIFE and got me on the track I’m now onthat I’m becoming a successful Internet marketer.

Two years ago I was a dyed-in-the-wool brand geek. To me, the brand was EVERYTHING. However, I was having an up hill struggle to convince the people
I worked with at that time that this was the case, that the brand was really important.

In desperation I asked George for his sage advice and in SIX WORDS, George nailed it. He said “Forget about branding, focus on sales!”

I saw the light, became a student of direct response marketing, improved the pulling power of my sales copy by a bajillion percent, and also, over a nine month period, became a top ten contributor to the Know-How Exchange of, a site with 365,000 registered users that gets 50-90 visitors per month.

When we focus on sales, on giving great value and on providing killer benefits, the brandour brand, creates itself. All we have to do from then on is be authentic.

Another great piece of advice comes from Jamie Lee Curtis. She said “The more I like me, the less I want to be like other people.”

“A tiger hunts best when it’s hungry.”

Got this advice after a business disaster years ago and was looking for help. Someone I love and admire said; no, not giving it to you because I care about you, and because a tiger hunts best when it’s hungry. He was right – always be “hungry”: for knowledge, for adventure, for challenge etc. If we get “everything” we need, we stop then get fat and lazy.

    Thanks for this thread Dean.

The best advice I ever had was a question: What would it look like to solve the problem instead of looking like you’re trying to solve the problem?

Very often we spend huge amounts of energy pursuing half-solutions or strategies that have failed us over and over (I can’t believe this person is letting me down again!).

The advice is, shift your thinking to taking full responsibility for putting the problem to bed instead of complaining about how tough it is, or how predictable the road blocks are, or how block headed other people are, or etc.

If I ever find myself saying, I KNEW this wouldn’t work (I knew they’d never change, I knew they’d never let me, etc.). Then I’ve caught myself trying to look like I’m solving the problem instead of getting it done.

Dean, I really loved yours when you first said it at the conference – it’s very hard to beat, it’s so undeniable. I have a couple to add. ‘You create your own reality’ has been my touchstone since I first heard it many years ago. The other one (it’s not really advice, more a maxim) is this: Your results are, in fact, your true intentions. Whenever I think I’m confused about what I want or what I need to do or what I care about, I check out what, in fact, I’ve got. My results tell me exactly what I meant, even if I’d thought I didn’t, and give me a chance to choose something different. The final one is: actions, not words. Works every time for me. Oh, and don’t sweat the small stuff…

I thought that was the best advice ever UNTIL just yesterday my best mate asked me my how my building business was coming along and when was I going to set up a website for it when I replied that I was JUST TOO BUSY for that right now.

SIMPLE and SWEET he said “Jimmy you are spending TOO much TIME, IN your business and NOT enough TIME, ON your business.”
