Step-by-step is a step in the wrong direction

Share

This is a controversial video that talks about the hidden dangers and impracticalities of relying on step-by-step.

What are your thoughts?

    Dean,

Sometimes, yes, step-by-step can be a step in the wrong direction.

The problem here is that many people choose this step while planning
their next step and it’s this that trips people up. They get stuck in notions
of “one day …” and “next year …” and so on because it’s safer and easier
to do this than to step WAY outside their comfort zone and push through
    the fear.

    Just my two cents’ worth.

Good stuff. I think it’s very similar what we do when we drive somewhere using a map. We can get basic directions to get us to the destination, which are a good framework, but every trip is different because of traffic, lights, road conditions, construction, weather, other cars on the road, etc.

Staying on course is a constant process of evaluating where you are and adjusting for current conditions. That can be done by YOU or somebody else, like a boss. It must be done though, because without it, you’ll never get where you’re going. And that is why a “non-interactive” list of instructions doesn’t work.

    David,

    That is a great example…

There is nothing wrong with wanting a road map, but you need to know how to re-calculate the route and be prepared to hit a few speed bumps along the way.

    Hi Dean,

It’s not really that controversial after all. As you said, step-by-step has its place and it’s brilliant in the right place, and as a businessman you need to know when to use it and when to avoid it and rely on your intuition and other skills.

    Cheers

    Kamil,

The point is that some people NEED step by step, and refuse to try things unless they have that hand holding… which means they dont have the right way of thinking to make it as an entrepreneur.

This is a great thought. I also believe that it is that some people do have to have laid out steps. This is just one way some one learns but psychology tells us if this is how they learn this is how they work. It really is a daily decision to force your self to work and function outside the comfort zone. I get a thrill from it myself.
    Thanks for another cool post.

come on Kamil – this is “buzz marketing” baby!

Dean wouldn’t get many views if his intro simply said “this is a video explaining that successful entrepreneurs are usually people who don’t need a set of instructions, but rather are capable of figuring out clever routes to achieve goals using their own initiative”.

no dice man… 0.001 in the Richter scale… as buzzy as a dead bee…

… no way Jose… this video is “controversial” and has “hidden dangers”

…learn from the king of buzz – he was sent here to help us!

    My short opinion is this:
We should never try and re invent the wheel.

Thus when you first want to do something you look for someone who already achieve it and model that person, or learn his method.

This simple act give you a ton of knowledge based on someone else’s real world experience.

But this should be a kind of launchpad that you run and take off with. Then you must go on and do your thing, with all the uncertainty the world and the business world is made of.

Rich Schefren had a very good writing on this, about uncertainty for entrepreneurs. I would recommend everyone to read it.

This is a great Video. I think sometimes it is easy to get caught up in the steps that you train your mind to look for someone out there who has it all scripted out, which takes away the creativeness needed to succeed

I like it. You are correct. If you are following a step by step then you are FOLLOWING and not leading.

Perhaps we shouldn’t reinvent the wheel, but understanding how it works and improving it is not reinventing it.

This is so true. I have had countless people ask me for a step-by-step paint by numbers system to make money online. The truth is, you must have a certain skill set and ability to take action. The best way to do anything is to jump in and make it happen. Happy new year!

    Great video Dean,

Us Entrepreneurs build great businesses because of our creative mind lots of courage faith and daily behaviours.
However some “wanna-be” entrepreneurs have yet to develop the daily success habits before even trying the programs. Some need hand holding or step by step, it then becomes a very expensive game… still i’m sure there are some rough diamonds out there that will make excellent students and even better teachers given time… Thanks for your great contribution to internet marketing…:-)
