A Marketing Lesson From Two Beggars

Two beggars are sitting side by side on a street in Rome – one has a cross in front of him; the other one the Star of David. Many people go by, look at both beggars, but only put money into the hat of the beggar sitting behind the cross.

A priest comes by, stops and watches throngs of people giving money to the beggar behind the cross, but none to the beggar behind the Star of David. Finally, the priest goes over to the beggar behind the Star of David and says, “My poor fellow, don’t you understand? This is a Catholic country; this city is the seat of Catholicism. People aren’t going to give you money if you sit there with a Star of David in front of you, especially when you’re sitting beside a beggar who has a cross. In fact, they would probably give to him just out of spite.”

The beggar behind the Star of David listened to the priest, turned to the other beggar with the cross and said: “Moishe, look who’s trying to teach the Goldstein brothers about marketing.”

    Why does everyone think they must “clone” sales pages, auto-responder letters etc.

    I have made a comfortable living marketing for 50 years “Outside the Box”.

    I will state it works much better Off-Line, because I am targeted serious people.

    The On-line audience sometime seems oblivious to the reality of SELLING quality products to Quality People who want them.

    The reason people copy is a very important one. If something works, don’t fix it!! Many people teach that to be unique or original when it comes to a sales letter is stupid. I agree… mostly. I think you have to have a personna, i.e. Dean Hunt, but the fundamentals need to be there, why re-invent the wheel?! Thinking outside the box when it comes to the psychology of a sales letter is the kiss of death for wealth.

    The guys in the joke didn’t try to get people to think differently, the used the already dug in psychology to make money…

    Much appreciated,I have enjoyed Jewish humor over the years as there is invariably a moral or lesson to be learned hidden away.

    In Jerusalem they pray at the “Wailing Wall” I have tried banging my head on brick walls but all I get is a headache.I suppose marketing is like that?
    Perhaps I should start praying instead? It definitely will be less painful.Might even improve my sales figures.
