Why So Serious?

“Why So Serious?”

That is the question I want to raise today…

More specifically, why do people take web business so seriously?

Don’t get me wrong, business is important, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some fun with it. In fact, if you have fun, you are more likely to succeed.

Sometimes we need to look towards younger people to learn exactly how to do it.

I was recently reminded of this when a 14-year old boy was able to outshine two fully grown adults in the web business world.

You can read this full story here: Dean Hunt Winner Has Big Balls (opens in new window)

In a nutshell, as part of a reality TV show that I was featured on, I offered one hour of my time as a prize as part of a competition. The winner was chosen, and he bottled it and said he wasn’t ready or sufficiently prepared.

So a second person was chosen, and once again, the prospect of having the king of the killer bunnies putting his business under the microscope scared him to the point where he also pulled-out.

So third time lucky, winner number 3 was chosen, but disaster…. he was 14 years old.

If two fully grown adults didn’t have the balls, surely a 14-year old would pull out?!?

Wrong!

His response: “don’t you dare change it! I can handle it!”

What’s more, he was so excited that he created this photo:

So the lesson here is that sometimes in business, exerience can be a negative. Occasionally we should take a leaf out of David Wilkinson’s book and not take things so seriously.

So next time you face a challenge in business, remember these infamous words from The Joker… “Why So Serious?”

I was wondering when this post was going to appear as I spotted the Big Marketing Online article on my RSS Feed this morning!

It’s crazy how people get into online business then, for want of a better expression, chicken out, when they have the opportunity to take their business to the next level. As though they are afraid of success.

Anyway, I’m sure you and young David will come up with something fantastic!

    Dave,

yes, it seems that appealing to my ego is the best way of getting a mention or a link from me ;)

You are right though, it is amazing how many people do that, and in a way, I am guilty of it myself sometimes, especially in the offline sense.

That said, in the online aspect I am fearless, so that helps balance it out.

Darn. I shouldn’t have taken that picture at 1AM… ;)

And it’s not that I don’t take things seriously. Heck, I take $10k days VERY seriously. It’s just, I really can’t be bothered with the formalities most of the time. I do this stuff because I enjoy it. I mean, it’s not like there are debts piling up on the doorstep. I’m still stuck at freaking school for crying out loud.

Looking forward to meeting ya’ Dean. And kicking some bunny-shaped booty. :P

    David,

Yes, I must also stress that not taking things too seriously doesn’t mean being unprofessional. It is more a case that people take themselves too seriously.

Looking forward to seeing you too.

As what some people said, business is about the game. It’s about money and oftentimes, it might be dirtier than you think. Business is business- the world on how to generate money and how to make your life happy with money.

To those who take it seriously, their game plan can ripped them off but to those who simply play it will come out victorious.

Business is a game no matter what. It can even result to personal conflicts. The game is dirty but necessary, right?
