Success Should be Fun

As a child I would occasionally hear stories about how my ancestors “worked their fingers to the bone”, and how they used to work 14 hour days, and come home unable to walk. I presumed that work had to be… well… work, but then a little thing called the Internet came along, and it blew the rulebook out of the window.

I read many blogs and websites on a daily basis, including many of the so called “a-list” bloggers, and they all seem to have one thing in common: they take things too seriously.

Look, I appreciate that making money is a serious and important thing, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun. Rules are there to be broken, and let’s be honest, the average person is going to be working for at least 40 years of their life, so we might as well try and enjoy it… right?

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, when I started out working online this was my goal, my mission statement, and my blueprint to happiness. I aimed to ensure that I didn’t take myself too seriously, that I would strive to be different, and most of all, that I would enjoy it. As I glance around my blog I see “6 billion feed readers”, I see Killer bunnies, and I see tongue-in-cheek humour in almost every post, so it would seem that I have achieved my goal, and I urge you to do the same.

Success can be fun, and what’s more, if you are having fun, being different, and pushing the boundaries, you will stand out from the crowd of grumpy bloggers and workers, and thus success will find you even faster.

I am proud to share this mission statement with you today in the hope that you too can adopt it as your own. So for that reason I have decided to change my blog title to:

“DeanHunt.com – Making Success Fun”

No doubt it will lose me a few hundred Google search visitors per day compared to those boring SEO optimized titles that we are so used to having to put up with, but I don’t care! This will act as a reminder to us all that success CAN be fun. Afterall, you only get one shot at this little game we call life, so why not enjoy it?!?

Rant over.

Dean

PS: I know I have mentioned this before, but if you haven’t already seen the “one last lecture video”, then you can see Randy doing the lecture live on Oprah here: One last lecture

    Very nice Dean.

I’m reading Built to Last at the moment and I think you hit the perfect mission statement for your business and website.

In the book they talk about a university spending over $1 million on there mission statement using high priced consultants.

They asked the head of the university if it was worth it, he said “Of course!”

Then they asked him what the new mission statement was and he didn’t know…

Funny, I was going to email you about this. I’m part of a membership site (that you know very well…) and they do a PERFECT job to teach…HOWEVER, EVERYTHING IS ABOUT NICHE AND SEO!

My understanding after reading your orgasm-something (a free gift in this community…)is that social bookmarking is the thing! Why bother with seo if you are able to get to the top on fex Digg with some first class headlines? I’m not saying this is easy though…

    Anyhooo Thanks for sharing this…

Hahahaa!! That’s a real funky logo! I even saw 3D bunnies when I tried 3D vision trick – you know when you look very closer to the image and then you see funny things. Or may be I’ve overworked today or drank too much Sosa-Sola today =]

    Anyway, BIG UP!

Yep—it’s ALL about the fun factor.

As someone who wrote a book called,

“Lipstick and Thongs in the Loony Bin”—I couldn’t agree more.

    :)

Rock on with those killer bunnies, man.

Dean – thank you for this message. The past few weeks have not been fun and after reading your message it was clear the reason for this was because I was being too serious. Time to change!

Also THANK YOU for posting Randy’s video – what a great message and what a great way to start my week!

Dean I absoloutely agree with you. Millions of people on the internet wheather they are playing online games, or starting online stores or even just blogs, take things absoloutely too seriously.

Everyone obsesses about their PR (page rank) about how good their SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is, and how many UNV’s (Unique Visits) they are getting each day. And while these things are important in the web industry they don’t make it what it is.

So I will stick with Dean on this one. Go out, have fun, make mistakes & learn from them. Because life; is about living.

    Dean,

Thanks for this. As a complete noob I keep having to break away because it all gets soooo freaking serious way too fast.

    Namaste.

The reason why I keep coming back here (aside from the killer information) is because of the tongue-in-cheek humor. Success CAN be fun – but you’re right, too many people take themselves too seriously. I have fun in my life so my business should reflect that. Keep the witty stuff coming – you crack me up.

    Bring on da fun!

Great philosphy. Like the old cliche says: life is too short not to have fun. I also think that chances of success are better when you are having fun. Keep it up Dean.

Life is far too short to be miserable. Enjoying what you do is important! One you do a better job plus you lighten the load a bit (that’s if you have one.)
And it doesn’t hurt too much to be happy.Does it?

And most of all” Don’t Grow UP!

Thanks for the link to Randy’s video.

He’s inspired me to do what’s important in life.
