Shopping For Websites

It has been a while since my last update and there is a perfectly good reason for that…. I have been involved in the purchase of a web site during the past few days.

I have purchased a web site that I aim to work on over the next 12 months and hopefully turn it into a nice little earner.

I have a process on buying web sites that is a little out of the ordinary, but it works well for me. What I basically look for is a web site that has a decent amount of links and pagerank. Ideally the site should also be doing fairly well in Google for its main keywords.

Where my process differs from others is that I see a site with low revenue as a POSITIVE.

Let me explain…..

If a site is earning $5k per month then the owner is either a)Not going to sell OR b)Will sell for a small fortune. So my goal is to find a site that has bags of potential BUT is not earning much money.

Once I find a site like this I start doing SEO, link building, partnerships, building content and basically just trying to increase traffic and revenue.

My worst case scenario is to need 9-12 months to recover the purchase costs.

That may not sound very impressive, but lets say I purchased 5 web sites at an average of $5,000 per site. Lets say that each site was getting decent traffic, had tons of backlinks, was in Dmoz etc…. and PRIOR to me buying the sites they made an average of $400 per month profit. So if the site was to carry on at the same rate as the previous owner then I would need approx 1 year to get all my $25k investment back. HOWEVER, my goal would be to treble the revenue within 12 months. So that would be $1200 per month per site ($6000 per month).

So one year later I have recovered all of my investment and now I am making $6000 per month PROFIT from the sites.

This method has one major PLUS and one major NEGATIVE.

PLUS = It is an investment with a superb exit strategy. By buying the site from a webmaster with limited SEO and marketing knowledge you are almost guaranteed to increase the value of the site over a 12 month period, so if you want to get rid of a site then you can easily sell it one year later for a profit :)

NEGATIVE = This approach requires at least one person to work fulltime on the sites. This person needs to be very knowledgeable in SEO, marketing, affiliate marketing and promotion.

Personally I am happy to take a year away from my well paid freelance work to give this a go. So what I really need now is an investor who is willing to be a part of this project.

I know it is not quite as exciting as the original dragons den concept, but it is a MUCH safer investment and it is a lot less hassle on the logistics front.

Many thanks.
