Seeing The World Through Marketer’s Eyes

I am currently staying in a bed and breakfast in Cheshire (England), and yesterday I had an experience that as a marketer, blew me away…

I was given directions to a b&b, and despite being on the correct road, I couldn’t find it. I even stopped off at another b&b on the SAME road, and they had never heard of it (despite living here 50 years).

So what happened?

Well, it turns out that this place was a magical and invisible place, found only by entering a secret portal, like in the Harry Potter movies…

Ok, well maybe that is not entirely true, but it may as well have been invisible, as it was set back off the road, covered in front by large trees, and there isn’t a sign or display or any form of pointer to suggest that this is anything other than a standard house.

Now, under normal circumstances this wouldn’t be an issue… but when you have been at the pinnacle of the marketing world for a while, you start to see the world through marketer’s eyes, and frankly, this shocked me.

Think about it…

I went to ANOTHER b&b to get directions… that person could easily have inticed me to stay there instead, but they didn’t have the Internet (another terrible error).

What’s more, they are on a busy road, so they are getting tons of traffic and eyeballs passing the place each day. With a nice big sign, they could attract passers by, get familiar with locals, and I am certain the sign would pay for itself within 10 months.

Heck, I am half-tempted to buy a sign for them myself.

So to all the businesses in the area, beware, I am here, and my marketer’s eyes are going to be assessing the world around me.
