Great posting Dean and what you talk about is very topical.

I’ve toyed with this over the years and there are many variables that you have to take into consideration.

i.e the offer, the list, quality of traffic, the amount and quality of launch build up etc

For example, when I put out a sales page I never do it “cold” there is always some sort of a launch beforehand so when I launch the sales page I usually get orders within seconds which means that they have not even read the page! They’ve just gone straight down and ordered.

Nothing beats a compelling headline and the offer.

The quality of traffic to the page is very important too.

If they already know you or the traffic is from an endorsement, even better!

Look forward to hearing your results, I’ve done loads on this!

    Thanks again

With every chapter name being a compelling headline in itself and a $1 price tag, who WOULDN’T order it?

    That’d just be plain silly.

    Sean,

    Thanks for the input.

Daiv, perhaps, however, those bullets took me 5 minutes to write. A sales page, including copy, editing, html, images, testimonials, videos etc… can take weeks, sometimes months.

I think that if you have authority in a certain niche, then a long sales page is not needed at all. As for creating a product and coming onto the scene for the first time, I think long salespages work best.

Why? Because every time I finish reading one of those long sales page, I’m very compelled to buy the product (even though I don’t).

    Rajaie,

The purpose of ANY sales page is to get the sale.

That it compels you is great, but if you don’t purchase, then it is of zero use.

Unless you are just a tight sod ;-)

In which case, hopefully the $1 trial offer will tempt you.

I would definitely buy the book based on the copy, but I HATE signing up for things that I have to remember to cancel, because I’m lousy at remembering to cancel.

    Carole,

I am the same… however, you DONT need to cancel. That option is only there for people who for some strange reason, think that the site doesnt give killer value.

    It 100% does.

What’s more, we are adding new products to the site every month, and only members can access it, so you would be loco to cancel.

The book was going to be $97, so you are getting a few months free anyway.

    Dean, hi,

I love the concept of a short sales page because I’m terminally lazy :-)

I never read the entire sales page when I come across one (even if I’m interested in what they’re selling).

I definitely never read the testimonials – after all, who the heck is going to put up a negative testimnonial..!? So you know what those are going to say before you even start.

I definitely read any guarantees that may appear and I definitely read the descriptions of features/benefits.

So for me a sales page needs to:

    * Have a clear statement of the features and benefits
    * Have a clear statement of the guarantee
    * Have a clear statment of the price (including whether it’s one off or monthly – I really liked your last para on that)
    * Have a clear statement of any post sales support the seller is offering.

    That’s about it.

    Cheers,

    Martin.

I HATE LONG SALES PAGES PERIOD.

I don’t know about others since I am an old baby boomer but I want to just get to the point and that is usually price!

Keep all the fancy bs words and just give me the facts.

Sorry, just don’t like hype which is usually all you get. After you pay you don’t hear another peep!

    Dean,

I still haven’t gotten around to Itty Biz’s Marketing School, which I downloaded months ago! And before that, I downloaded another program that I can’t even remember the name of, because I haven’t had time for it!

So, my main problem is that I don’t have TIME for another membership site right now—don’t really have time for a new book either, but when the price is right, I hate to pass it up…. I would LOVE to get the book, but what would happen is that I would add it to my “to read” folder, go check out the membership site ONCE, bookmark it, not have time to visit again, and then forget to cancel, and get charged for the next month, and get pissed off that I got charged for something I’m not using. Then I’d have bad feelings come up everytime I thought about your site, so I wouldn’t visit it even when I had time. (It’s a VERY predictable series of events—I’ve been through it too many times….)

I’m interested in how your experiment turns out because I really want your short copy to work. I really do.

I hate long sales copy – to me it’s cheesy, over-hyped, over-exaggerated hyperbole and I don’t trust it – nor most of the sites that use them. I especially hate the testimonials from people like Bob and Anne, and the thousand dollars of extra free goods you get with your $29.00 purchase.

Last year I decided to check an offering out – mostly to see if I would get ripped off, figuring as a web developer kinda gal I oughtta know this stuff so I can tell my clients. And boy what a nightmare. The $2.97 special ended up being $44 dollars after the upsells and charges for service and handling were figured in. Then came a $500 extra charge on my credit cad bill for the course binder I had unwittingly bought and then had to pay a customs duty for at the door. Seems that by giving them my credit card # I had agreed to everything in the 25,000 word copy letter – and this was hidden somewhere in there in the dreaded “fine print.”

Then my email asking them how to stop the service was ignored – and they started charging me recurring charges on my credit card for the program at regular prices. Yes, I had agreed to that in the copy too and it took 3 phone calls and 3 months to finally get it stopped and the money returned. The woman on the service line actually thanked me for not screaming at her as all the other customers do, which goes to show that they have many “happy customers.”

Is that the business model? Grab the credit card # and run up charges? I’d expect this from a porn company, not a “respected” internet marketing school that sits on the first page of the SERPs. But then again, the latter is only because they have a high paying affiliate offering for their product, and is being hyped up the wazoo on a gazillion other scammy long tail pages by people who have most likely never tried the service.

So there. There may be suckers born every minute, but should we try to take advantage of them?

The rub? The $500 binder with 6 CDs was actually good and worth the money. Very comparable to other courses out there and I still refer to it. But I will never buy from these guys again or tell my friends about them. Nor trust them.

So – go short sales letter go. Not that they ensure that the product/service providers are any less scammy, but one may actually have a better chance at reading all the text and catching the crap in the fine print before one gets soaked.

    Cheers.

Hey Dean – I goofed on my URL and put a comment instead of a period in my URL. Can you fix please? Much thanks. And thanks for making your recurrent charges known up front like that, though I still think a reminder letter before expiry to be a more customer friendly approach.

I hate long sales pages, and always try to avoid them. I find your short, up-front sales page much more readable and attractive. But sorry, I’m not tempted. May be I don’t want to make six-figure as inbox junkie.

I hate long sales pages. I too just go to the bottom of the page to see the price. But I have never seen anything you have done that wouldn’t make me want to read every word of any sales page you created. Never bored with anything you create.
