How Effective Are Flops?

Not long ago I seem to recall a movie called “The Producers”. The premise of the movie was that the producer wanted to create the worlds worst ever show. The theory was that if they created the biggest ever flop they would get so much publicity that they would become a huge cult success.
The movie in question was very much a spoof film, and the idea of creating a flop on purpose must surely still be concidered as a crazy idea. However, I stumbled across a video today that has backed up my belief that flops are a great way to get publicity.
I stumbled across this video at Digg.com and so far it has had an amazing 1948 diggs. It is also a huge hit at Youtube.com and it has already been seen by possibly hundreds of thousands of people.
So it begs the question, how much publicity could we get by purposely making something as bad as possible?
The video in question is a recruitment video for Appalachian State University and became a huge viral hit. The video consists of a cheesy video and an even cheesier song.
I am sure that the video was NOT supposed to be amusing, infact I am sure that a lot of hard work went into making it look as professional as possible…. but the end result is still hilarious.
Don’t take my word for it, take the Deanhunt.com challenge and test it for yourself.
Step 1: Get a glass of water and put as much as possible in your mouth.
Step 2: Watch the video below whilst keeping the water in your mouth.
Step 3: Try not to laugh at the video. Doing so will result in a mouthful of water being sprayed across your monitor.
