Get In Her Head - Website Critique

GetinHerHead.com Website Critique by Dean Hunt & Barry Dunlop

This is a website critique for GetInHerHead.com, the site is aimed to keep both people out of the proverbial “dog house” i.e in trouble with their girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife.

On first glance it seemed like the site was a little unfocused, the first part of the confusion is the fact that there is a “for her” and “for him” site, we appreciate you are trying to utilise the traffic as best as you can, but personally, we would just have a small image in the top right corner for the GetInHisHead.com site.

Other than the fact that the copy on the homepage could use a little tweaking, it is actually a nice looking page, with a good layout, and interesting use of colours.

Branding

With a site like this, branding, and being remembered is key.

Yet for such an interesting and creative idea and topic, the branding doesn’t really achieve anything.

With terms like “stay out of the dog house” and “get in her head”, there is potential for a killer logo, and a great tagline, but neither are done here.

Your browser may not support display of this image.

Looking at the above logo, it doesn’t really give anything… we would have done an image of a human in an actual dog house, or a man holding a magnifying glass to his girlfriend’s head… or something creative like that.

In fact, there are loads of options straight off the top of our heads…

  • A dog house that has a giant padlock on it
  • A head with a love heart in the center
  • A man with a dog’s bone in his mouth

The opportunities are almost endless to do something creative here, it would be a shame to waste it.

Ok, so let’s get right down to the meat and bones… getting tons of web traffic.

How do we ensure that this site starts getting days of 30,000+ visits?

There are a few ways that we would go about doing this, and we are going to focus on traffic generation for the rest of this critique, as it is essentially what is going to determine the success, or failure of this site.

A Viral Report

The first thing we would do is create a viral report. Perhaps 5-15 pages of interesting content that you give to everyone who signs up for a free account.

For example: “10 Reasons Your Girlfriend May Secretly Hate You”

Then give great relationship advice.

Or, “Escaping The Dog House – a Relationship Black Book for the Modern Male”

It doesn’t take long to do something like this, we can knock a high-quality report up in less than a day.

The great thing about these reports are that they will build your brand, people will remember you, and best of all, if they enjoy it, they will tell their friends.

In fact, you could create a script whereby they get a further report for free providing they email the first report to three of their male buddies.

A Buzz Stunt

Ok, here is what you do… announce on your blog that you are going to attempt to live in an actual dog house for 48 hours. Then, send out a press release to the media, grab a web-cam, and stream it to the world.

Say that you have been a really crappy husband, or boyfriend for x years, and so you are living literally in the dog house for 48 hours? Stream it live on the net, and bingo, you have enough viral material to become a globally known name.

Creative Content

Again, there is so much great stuff you could write about that would attract attention.

Here are some content angles that you could use, and again, this is all off the top of our heads, so with time, and an expert understanding of the hot topics in your industry, you could create hundreds more.

“The Best Weapon In The Battle Against The Dog House”

This would also be great for your press release title.

“10 Things I Know About Your Girlfriend That You Don’t”

Curiosity and controversy, a guaranteed winner.

“The Relationship Cheat-sheet”

People like easy to get quick results, this will appeal to them.

“5 Romantic Gestures That Are NOT Romantic”

This is gold. In fact, it is a perfect angle and headline for a site like Digg.com

“7 Confessions Of a Female Escort”

This could actually be a product. Teach people what NOT to do, and the mistakes most guys make.

Overall, this is the sort of content we would want to see on the blog of GetInHerHead.com and we would want to see viral reports on these content angles.

Viral Quiz

This would be superb… create 10 questions that have multiple choice answers, have a webpage… e.g /quiz.html on your site, and at the top of the page, have a cartoon graphic made of a guy on the left, and a vicious dog in a dog house on the right.

For every question you get wrong, the guy moves closer to being mauled by the dog. 3 Wrong and it is game over.

Here is the thing, if the user gets eaten by the dog, you put up a message saying: “it seems you have a lot to learn, but fear not, we have created a free report that contains all the answers needed to stay out of the dog house for life, download your copy by putting your name and email here”

If they manage to successfully answer all 10, give this message:

“Congratulations, you did well. But there are over 30 more secrets that are too spicy to reveal online. Download your steamy guide to staying out of the dog house for life by putting your name and email in the boxes below”.

Pretty cool huh?!?

With a quiz like this, you can get 100,000+ subscribers if it becomes viral.

Viral Flash Game

This is a little more complex, and would require outsourcing… but you could create a flash arcade game designed to promote your site.

For example, there is a girl who is mad at you, and she is trying to catch you, if she catches you, then you end up in the dog house, so you have to avoid being caught for as long as possible.

Something like this could be outsourced for under $1,500 and could drive a lot of traffic if it was successful. Again, you could give this to your free members as a gift, and encourage them to tell their friends about it.

Perhaps give a free prize to the person with the top score.

Summary

We love the concept of the site, and to be honest, it looks pretty good as well. It is a useful site, and seems to work correctly, so the only thing missing is buckets of targeted traffic.

Try the above techniques, stay patient, and we are confident that traffic will come.

What a great review of this site, you have really made me think about my own website and how valuable it is to my readers. I have also been thinking about my own branding issues. I love the idea you have here about the quiz and of course the concept of the man getting eaten by the dog. This is a great way to promote a free report and a great way to spread the word about the website. Do you think something like this can work for all websites?

    Thanks Julie,

Thanks for your input yesterday as well.

Cole, perhaps you could share your feedback with us? Anything that you are taking action on already? Anything that stood out as a good tip? etc…

In my opinion, everything you mentioned should be put into action. All of the ideas, headlines, ect are all killer and I think that with the help of each aspect you mentioned, your site will be a global phenomenon in no time.

Plus, its a great site :)

If you’re targeting males though, I’d suggest possibly rethinking the blue/pink combo as that is a color combo geared towards women more. Something maybe a bit more rustic or dark might work better to attract males when they open your site up.

Great review Dean :) Looks a great website, if they follow your advice they will go very far!

I love the creative content ;-)

Hm Dean and Barry you seem to have some similar thinking and creativity patterns as mine…maybe that’s the reason why we’re able to produce viral content and so great results.

    Here’s some more ideas:

First, your website doesn’t simply tell me what the site is about (although the flash after I click on more info is really great). Here’s some ideas for explanation:

Is your girlfriend pissed off for forgetting ALL (or most) of her important dates? The reason for that might not be what you expected…click here to find more. And then explain that the reason is because he doesn’t have a good strategy for managing the dates and your website is that ‘missing’ strategy…

    OR…

Simply connect it to a well known fact. You know, from that book “Made from Stick”…it’s a great idea.

    So, let’s find out.

Girlfriend and boyfriend sometimes argue a lot >>> What is one of the top 3 reasons for arguing among gfs. and boyfrends…THE MISSING DATES…

    Also…

What are the happiest moments in a relationship…THE IMPORTANT DATES. So your service can be something like “Bringing you happier relationships…” or “Eliminating over 20% of your relationship problems”. Of course, giving always some interesting titles that break their guessting machines help sites go viral…

    Here’s an example:
“Eliminating over 20% of your relationship problems” is a good headline if you convert is to: “Find out how Get in Her Head” solves over 20% of your relationship problems…and at the end: Sign up for that and that.

I don’t understand this getting in the “dog house” metaphor (we don’t say it that way in my country) but if you say “you got in the dog house” as a signal of getting a problem in a relationship…boy…the possibilities are FREAKING ENDLESS (and Dean described only A FEW).

    Here’s some ideas of mine:

Get a picture of a guy in a dog house alone…and a guy out of the dog house with a smoke hot girlfriend…and make your logo say: LEADING YOU FROM HERE (from the first pic) to HERE (the second pic).

I have more ideas but these are just few…I’m really in sleep now.

Also, would like to suggest on titles like:

“10 Things I Know About Your Girlfriend That You Don’t”

If after the numbers you insert a noun, in my experience I found this is a HUGE mistake. ALWAYS use intensifier…don’t say 10 Things…say 10 SHOCKING/SECRET/MIND-BLOWING/SEXY (usually negative works better…you’ve seen the tabloid where they have SHOCKING, EYE OPENING, EXCLUSIVE and adjectives like that?) Things or 10 Things I know about your girlfriend that you don’t and NEVER WILL (this is intensifier too).

I guess the buzz stunt would still work but not for long…as people are realizing this viral tactic there’s gonna be competition for some exceptional challenges so you can also use intensfiers here…I not only lived 48 hours but I had the pic of my girlfriend and wrote 30 lines of “I will not act like a jerk”. Did that for an hour. The second hour…”I will be a better housband…”. Then say if you don’t change your behavior in 30 days and if your wife says you’re the same you gonna turn your ENTIRE house into a dog house…

Having a bone into your head makes you a loser (lol) so that’s not a good idea.

You can also create a Facebook app or a viral quiz named: How deep are you into the dog house? Then let him/or her give you some details as age and location (for ranking reasons) and then display him/her the results and rankings for how deep are people on their age/location into the dog house.

Of course, cooperating with another websites on relationships (that’s the niche, right?, also weddings…because you want the husband to remember the dates AT THE START of the marriage…you can even write an article…Why (or xx reasons or funny/shocking/mind-blowing) remember important dates immediately after a marriage and pitch your service :P

Also I would like to thank Dean for his viral marketing blog because without it I would never recognize the beauty and fall in love into this type of marketing…
