I recently interviewed Matt via email, because I thought that his story was inspirational, motivational, and damn right impressive. So let’s get started…

1) Matthew, thanks for taking the time to speak to me. Could you please tell me a bit about your background?

Hello Dean, thanks for having me here.

I have been a leading international musician for about ten years, and most of my life has been devoted to music. I’ve always had an entrepreneurial streak in me however, and in the last couple of years I’ve been working hard to turn my business sense into action … and money of course. I’ve managed to do this, and take my musical career forward as well: one thing helps the other.

2) Have you always been blind?

Yes, since birth and I’m 33 now.

3) What made you decide to work on the Internet?

A few things For a blind person, the internet is fantastic and I’ve found that it has opened up an incredible amount of opportunity for me, both in the musical and business world.

I use software called a screen reader, which speaks everything aloud from the computer. My lifestyle involves a large amount of international travel, so I wanted to find something which was flexible, and which I could operate from anywhere in the world. That’s the beauty of the internet I find.

5) One of my favourite quotes is: “Obstacles are not there to keep you out, they are there to ensure that only the people who want it bad enough can get in“. Do you have any messages or words of advice regarding overcoming obstacles in life and business?

I would very much agree with you here. Another way of seeing this (and I apply this to my own life) is that obstacles should be seen as a challenge rather than a barrier. We all have our things in life to deal with, and the better you become at “going through the struggle” the further you can go in every area. I’ve found this with writing sales copy for example … it’s a bit of a brain melt, but incredibly satisfying when you get to the end: just like taking a difficult piece of music from a first read-through, to a concert performance.

6) You have a product coming out soon based on horse racing. This is an area I have considerable experience in… could you tell us a little about it?

In 2005 I was looking for ways to make additional income. I’ve never been a betting man to be honest. In fact, my only prior experience was at the dog track, where I’d occasionally put £2 on a dog and then jump up and down shouting “guan number 6″, which didn’t really help very much. I saw however, that with the correct mindset, that betting could be approached in exactly the same way as running a business. Afterall, one of the fundamentals of running a successful business is in balancing the numbers.

7) What made you choose this niche?

Sports betting has become very popular in the last few years, because if you do it right, the return on investment (roi) is far better than the stock market, or a bank account for that matter. I’ve always had a liking for numbers, and I (almost accidentally) found some statistics from which i could make a profit on horse racing. I never really intended to bring my system to the market, but I saw that I could actually help people out, and I get a buzz out of that.

If you can help somebody do something better, which might improve their life, that’s no bad thing if you ask me. The method is called the Favourites Phenomenon System or FP System for short. The thing I like most about it is that the profits are incredibly consistent, between 98 and 99% of the time in fact,. I think consistency over quantity (in every area of life) is always better.

9) Is there anything else you would like to add Matthew?

Just one thing, and it’s this … Never be afraid of difficulty, and never be afraid to fail. If you want to do something in life, make sure your desire is “really there” and then go for it, no matter what anybody says.

Here is the thing, I was reading the ‘4 hour work week‘ by Tim Ferriss approx six months ago, and he was discussing all the amazing things he does for hobbies and fun… everything from dancing the Tango, to kick boxing, and then he made a comment, and I must stress that I can’t remember the exact quote, but it was along the lines of how video gaming is a huge waste of time, and that he never does it.

Now, I recall feeling a little bad about this, as I personally love to play video games, I have done since I was three, and I probably play a few hours per week on average.

To make matters worse, I then went to a few of my regular ‘Millionaire Mastermind Group’ meetings, and nobody has mentioned video games there yet either… They mention adventures in aeroplanes, trips across Mexico, bike rides in India (which I may be doing), and car related subjects… but never video games.

For an industry that is BIGGER than the movie industry, why on earth are none of these people playing video games? And should I try and quit?

So it got me thinking… is there any connection between people who play video games, and people who are successful entrepreneurs/business men?

I have been speaking to some additional contacts and friends… and I believe there is some connection. From what I have seen, there are two types of entrepreneur:

1) The passionate, go getter, ruthless, live life to the full type …. you know the one I mean. The guy who lives and breaths business, who always seems to be busy.

2) The creative and artistic type…. this type is often quieter, less socially aware, but a huge thinker, and has a real creative spark.

I noticed that all of my contacts who are in the latter category play video games, and all of my contacts in the first category despise them. Which, by no means is a scientific study… but personally I think it is interesting.

So why is this?

Speaking as someone who is more in the creative camp, I find that video games can take you into a new world, they can expand your mind and open up new possibilities, and they can be a break from the norm, almost a reset button for the mind. For a creative person, this element of fantasy is sure to inspire and entertain.

Whereas a go getter, an Alpha business type (like my father), would see it as a pointless waste of time. After all, what is the point of putting so much time and effort into something that gives no fees able benefits or rewards.?

So my questions for you all are:

1) Do you consider yourself in the Alpha group or the Creative group in life?

2) Do you play video games?

3) Do you think there is any connection here at all?

At first it sounded like something from a rock concert, but today I am going to share my first experience with you, and also will be showing you the new logo for DeanHunt.com

What is Crowd Sourcing?

Essentially it is the art of having a specific task done by many different people, and then you choose the best one.

Why is it Useful?

Crowd sourcing let’s you see the vision and skills of many different people BEFORE you pay. Also, whilst you may get 20+ different versions, you only pay for the one that you like the most. So it dramatically reduces the chance of failure.

My Experience with 99designs

I used 99designs.com recently because I wanted a new header image for this blog. As you can see here I got over 30 entries.

The Cost

I paid approx $39 to list the contest, and I paid $129 to the winner. So all in all I got a new header image and logo for well under $200. Not bad at all in my opinion.

Yes, I could have gotten one for less than $100 if I had asked around, but there is the key issue…. “ONE”. What if I didn’t like it?

With crowd sourcing you get to spread the risk around, and like any good investment, that is key.

The Winning Design

In the end there were 5 or 6 I really liked. Which were narrowed down to three. But the eventual winner was this design which will be added to the blog soon.

I am happy with this header, but truth be told, it wasn’t my personal number one choice, but a lot of my friends, contacts and you the readers voted for it… so for once, I went with the majority. I do like it though, and have made plans for future versions of this to be released (halloween, Christmas etc…)

Summary

Overall I thought the experience was great. I was so happy with their efforts that I intend to promote all of the designers on here in a future post for FREE. Something that could be worth thousands of dollars in publicity for some of them.

I think the power of a crowd is unbeatable, and I am racking my brains trying to think of ways we can use this for some fun.
