Don’t Fear Failure

In this two minute video I talk about why you shouldn’t fear failure.

Without making an attempt you can NEVER know what the outcome will be.

The whole “Woe is me”, I’m crap at X” attitude is a BS cop out. Some Yoda logic comes in here: There is no try, there is do or do not!” Indeed. That’s why I’m taking action every day to move just a little bit closer to the next thing.

    Gary,

    I agree 100%.

I have found that both in terms of business and even personal life, if I take risks and try things, I am often rewarded for that.

The Butterfly effect is a powerful thing, and one small attempt today, may make a huge difference a month from now.

I totally agree Dean! Fear is a good thing yet it drives most people into inaction. If you can learn to make it a habit to push through fear and follow through, you will in turn learn to take that fear and use it as fuel, to turn it into a force to drive you. Public Speaking is a great example of this. Rarely do you completely let go of the jitters, the ole’ butterflies in the stomach. But in time you learn to use that fear and it resonates in your speech as enthusiasm. Don’t fear the fear. Use the fear!

p.s. My problem is people say I am indecisive, but ‘m not so sure. ;)

    Nice one mate,

“Don’t fear the fear. Use the fear!”

    I couldnt agree more.

I spoke a couple of weeks ago, and had been in bed all week with a bad virus… so I was worried about having enough energy to get through a 90 minute presentation… needless to say, a healthy dose of fear gave me the little push I needed to rock it.

Fear is there for a reason.

    Hi Dean,

    Really good advice again.

I think what you have to do is break down the activity, if we used the public speaking scenerio I think if anybody said right go and public speak in front of 100 people, I dont think you would get many takers. I know I could not do. I know my skill set.

BUT if I started small like, did a youtube video, did a podcast, join a speakers club, do a debate, do a small presentation, it would not be long before I could speak in front of 100 people.

So with evey activity break it down, however small to get to the end goal, seems to be working for me.

    Kevin,

That is certainly an effective way of doing it… I personally went for podcasts and online videos as a way of getting some experience.

That said, the fear is still going to be pretty darn high regardless.

    Hi Dean,

Fear – took a group of girls rock climbing last week from a community club outside manchester, I help run, they all under 13, all of them wanted to do it, when got their they all looked at wall, most did not want to go up.

So we put their gear on,
    chatted, tested ropes
climbed on first rung on wall, tested ropes,
went higher, then a little higher,
In end all girls got to top of wall,
looking back they broke it down and acheived it, have to agree some of them were still scared but they did it, I was chuffed, thewy were chuffed.

Even the best baseball players only hit .300 or so…only hit 40 or so home runs in 600 at-bats, etc…etc…

And those same players, the top 1-3% of all baseball players, STILL have to be voted into the Hall of Fame.

They fail most of the time, yet are regarded as the “best” in their field.

Most of the time, when you leap outside of your comfort zone, try something “way out there”, you end up finding out that the stuff you were afraid of really doesn’t exist in the first place.

    Great vid Dean.

Great vid… Like they say you learn more from your failures then from your successes.

For me this is true.. the more you fail the more you know your getting done.

People who don’t fail, are the people that don’t take action.

As my friend says, “Good one” Dean. This is timely advice for me.

I hate being dead in the water. Ever been like that? At the helm of a perfectly great yacht and there’s no wind in the sails (sales). If no wind, fire up the motor…better to try, it’s true.

My other friend, gotta love him…went overboard (literally)…who cares, kind of made me come alive with concern, then we turned around and got him. AND the girls all wanted to dry him off so, well, I guess that was alright, too (for him).

Not that I’m looking for that kind of attention, but it’s all good.

    Dean mate,

I agree with you 110% on this topic. I keep telling everyone I meet the very same thing. You can fail as often as it takes, as long as you never let yourself get defeated. Nice video mate.

EXACTLY!!!! There’s a reason they say ‘activity breeds activity.’ Doing something – even if it’s done the ‘wrong’ way – is so much better than sitting on your hands in worry and doubt. As a friend of mine says ‘there’s not often a way out, but there’s always a way through.’

You’ve inspired me to add video to Multi-TaskingWoman.com!

Fear of failure is temporary; the feeling of regret for not having tried can be forever. So yes, I’ve gone skydiving, chatted up beautiful women, foiled bureaucrats when they’ve tried to steal my money… (Nice Liberty t-shirt, Dean.)

Courage isn’t the absence of fear, but taking action in spite of it.

Feel the fear and do it anyway – that’s me.

I wouldn’t have got anything done – ever – if I thought it was meant to stop me!!

Blimey, fear just comes along for the ride!

And it has to run to keep up!!!

Love and courage to everyone. xx

yes, I totally agree. It is better to have tried and failed than never to have tried at all.. If you tried and you failed, then you can change your strategy so that next time you do it again there’s more chances of succeeding.

I agree with the concept, only thing is what if trying involves gambling you life savings….

    - Then by not trying your better off than failing so you have to seriously look at the odds of success vs failure.

So as long as its something that is a “nothing to lose” by trying scenario then yeh I agree, its obvious really but worth saying out load to reinfoce it thanks Dean.
